Before doing the etchings, I did a few more woodcuts, this time using a different type of wood that I got from the 3D workshop. For the designs I used one side for the last part of the saying - 'See No Evil' and the other, I decided to carve out an evil eye, designed based on the symbols I had seen online. However, I found it quite difficult cutting into this type of wood, it wasn't as soft as the wood I had used previously, and the marks came out a lot more jaggedy, but I decided to go with it and see how it would print.
For the prints, I decided to go with the traditional colours of the evil eye for the symbol, and decided to use dark colours and black for the text. I tried to do a three way gradient with different shades of blue for the evil eye. I also used different shades of blue. Once I had made the first print with the text I decided to overlap it with the other text based wood cuts to see what that would look like, I used green and pink for the overlapping text, as I felt that those bright colours would show up better over the black. Overall the prints didn't come out as well as I had hoped. The marks in the wood showed up a lot more than I would have liked, and I don't think the type of wood worked well with the ink as the ink fell into the gaps of the wood, highlighting the lines and natural marks in the piece of wood. However, I did like the effect this made, I did like how the natural marks of the wood were made visible by the ink, and I like how this creates a tension between the mechanical process of printing and the natural effect of the wood.
I have since done another wood cut - redoing the 'See No Evil' wood cut on better, softer wood which was easier to cut. I made sure that all of the text was spaced out evenly and equally, and added slightly more detail to the eye. I preferred this version as the text is a lot clearer, there is the inclusion of the eye and links in well with my previous two wood cuts - 'Speak No Evil' and 'Hear No Evil'. In addition to the revamped 'See No Evil' design, I also did a new evil eye wood cut, this time adding in some pattern detail in the background, based on the designs I have been looking at online. At first, I had 'See No Evil' added in the corner, but when I did a test print, I didn't like how the text had come out, and because it was so small, I was worried that if I had tried to make adjustments I would ruin the text, so I decided to get rid of the text, and add it on later in pen. I also tried to get rid of some of the remaining wood which was still printing to try and get a clean cut. It looked a lot better and a lot more effective after I had made the adjustments.
- overlap with other woodcuts?
- use over collage photocopies?
- print over magazine/newspaper? - create a series of them?
- print on fabrics? - old scarves from charity shops? cut up cloth?
