This was the first part of the Painting Workshop for skills 2. I decided to explore painting as well as I felt I could improve on what I had learnt about painting in the past and I also have an interest in painting after doing it for so long. The basis of the workshop was to learn about colour mixing and how different colours compliment each other. I had already been taught about this briefly in the previous year, but it was good to go back and remind myself of how colours work. I really enjoyed thinking about colour placement, and working with others to create these interesting artworks comprised of different painterly gestures and marks. It was also nice to add something to others work, it's like leaving your mark and making your work that much more collaborative and interesting.
We went through different stages when we were creating our piece. We first played with different shades of our given colour which was yellow, adding blue, red and even green to create different tones. We tried to carry on some of the shapes, like the yellow duster hanging off of the shelf. We then moved to another piece which was completely different to ours and had a lot more going on. Their colour was orange but they had a shelf of blue objects so we carried on with the blue. Adding swirls, and tracing outlines of the shapes in blue. We carried on from where they had already stuck some blue in the bottom right corner. We then moved back to our piece and added ink, more items of a different colour, our own small still life paintings, cut parts out and added text. I think we moved away from the paint and started adding our own marks into the piece, kind of going away from the original idea.
Overall it was an enjoyable and interesting session and I think I have learned valuable skills which I hope to try and incorporate with my prints, and I will probably start to think about what specific colours I want to use and how I want to use them within my prints.
- incorporating complimentary colours to my prints? - Warhol block colour relations?
- perhaps start to move to painting? - painting & collage?
- explore gestural marks and combine with print?
