After doing the collages, I looked back at the cutouts, and realised that they could make interesting pieces as I had cut out a gap where the eyes and mouths were. I suddenly got the idea of sticking the leftover image down and painting inside the cut out gap. I liked how it looked like a block-aid over their eyes and mouth and further added to the idea of censorship and women's portrayal in society. At first I used different colours, but I felt they were too bright and decided to try using black acrylic paint to block out the features. I felt this was a better colour choice as it was dark and not too in your face and not too pop arty.
I then decided to take this idea one step further, by collaging images over the gaps. I really liked the idea of blocking out parts of the images of women from the magazines as it was playing with the idea of what is acceptable to view and also links to how censored the female body is, and how manipulated images of women are in magazines and posters etc. I chose to use flowers as I was inspired by Marcelo Monreal, a digital collage artist based in Brazil, his work involves faces of women and men being distorted and flowers growing through the faces like nature reclaiming decrepit statues. I really liked these pieces and have worked from them before as reference material. I also chose to block out the eyes and mouth not because they were already cut out, but because it also linked in with the idea of seeing and saying 'no evil' and combining that with the struggles of women having their voices heard. I wanted to try and present that idea in an interesting but powerful way.
From this I then decided to hand draw the flowers in the gaps, an idea combining both the collaged images and the block painting. I did one painted and one pen drawn. I really liked these as they portray the idea of censorship in a completely different way. Overall these experiments were really effective and I think I want to combine these with my wood cuts, or even make a print based from these designs. Censorship, especially censorship surrounding women is an idea that I definitely want to explore further in the future whether it be through other forms of printing or even painting.
- wood cut print based of collages?
- use of paint?
- further exploration?
