This week was the second half of the paint workshop. This week we used oil paints and made paintings based on the shapes we were given, I was given a square, a square with a diamond cut out, and an arc. We were given canvas fabric for these paintings and I cut mine in half to allow me to do two paintings.
We first did an acrylic painting using black and white paint, and using the shapes in whatever way we wanted, we created an image which we would base our oil paintings on. I wanted to create this really neat, clean, painting using the shapes, and then distort them by stamping the shape on top of the clean shapes and creating this collision of chaos and order. I really liked how this came out, and I really liked the texture of the paint when it was stamped on with the paper cutout.
My first oil painting was closely based on the acrylic painting - first carefully painting out the shapes and then going over it with paint marks and I decided to paint outlines of squares over the top. I liked this repetition of the shapes and I liked the colourfulness of it. However, I think if I did this again I think I would distort the central shapes even more. For the second painting I decided to do block colours, but still using the square shape. I took inspiration from Mondrian's work, and other cubist works. I did like how this came out, but I think my first one was more effective and interesting as it wasn't so thought out. It was more of a playful piece. I did add the diamond shape to the centre to bring it back in with my shapes.
Overall, I really enjoyed the painting workshop and it was fun to actually use oil paints in the proper way, using turpentine and not water like I had in the past when I was just playing with oils. However I don't think I'm going to use them much more in the future as the drying time is too long for me, I like to work quickly. The colour pay off was also impressive and the marks made were really interesting. This painting workshop has really allowed me to think about the use of colour and has inspired me to use paint within my project. I think I would like to try and combine print and paint together, and perhaps even start to experiment with colour.
- combine paint and print? - complimentary colours?
- paint evil eye?
- experiment with colour?
