After doing these collages I wanted to create a wood cut print which encompassed this theme of female power and courage, and decided to use the symbol of a fist in air with the word power on the top. I used an outline as reference and I really liked how this came out as a print. There was something about it that made it powerful.

I first experimented with a double print - I printed a block of colour first, then printed the cut image in the complimentary colour afterwards. I really liked how striking these were and how they reminded me of a type of propaganda, like the 'We Need You!' WWI posters. I think the purple/yellow print looked the most effective out of the two. The yellow really makes the fist stand out. I then decided to print on top of feminist imagery, such as photographs from the women's march, as I felt this imagery would work well with the message behind the woodcut; the power of women, the strength of women etc. I also printed on top of the eyes collage, this was more of an experiment to see what it would look like and to see if the messages would be effective together, and I think they worked well, the eyes look as if they are judging you and the with the added word of 'Power', it gives this connotation that these eyes have more power than you realise. I finally printed this image on top of some floral patterns as I wanted to see how the idea of power and a feminine background would work, whether or not the feminine background would change the image in any way, change the meaning in anyway. I think these came out really well, and have had positive responses from people, which shows to me that this imagery is effective in getting responses.
Overall, I'm really happy with this print. I think it's very versatile and can be just as powerful on it's own as well as on top of other imagery. I do know that I want to explore this idea of feminism and female power further, possibly even dropping the symbol imagery, or perhaps going back to that at a later date I'm not sure, but I definitely want to explore this idea further. Maybe introducing different mediums such as paint and collage, different imagery, text and so on.
- collage?
- painting?
- explore the theme further?
- more prints? - different design?]
