Mixed Media Collages....

I decided to move onto mixed media collages from the painting. I first painted out flowers within the shape and size of my woodcut, paying close attention to detail and the shading. Once it dried, I photocopied it so I had multiples to experiment with. The first mixed media collage I did involved printing on top of the painting and then adding text from the magazines that I had lying around. I specifically chose to use the words 'Stay Pretty, Stay You'  as I was inspired by a song that I was listening to at the time called 'Stay Pretty', and liked how powerful and motivational the words were and added my own words to make it my own. 

For the second mixed media collage, I decided to cut up one of the photocopies into strips, and chose an image from one of magazines which I found quite artistic and also cut that into strips. I then alternated the strips - painting/magazine image/painting and so on to form this interrupted image. I then added text on top of this - 'Stay Fierce' as I felt that it was appropriate with the fashion that the model is wearing in the photograph. I really like how striking this is, and how similar it looks to an album or magazine cover. I might do this again, but instead of using a photocopy, I would paint the flowers in between instead. 

Finally, I decided to stick on words and statements which I felt were empowering and represented the idea of female power. This particular piece I'm not 100% happy with and I'll probably redo this one again, perhaps adding the prints? And then adding text on top of that. 

Overall, I really like these as a series, and I think they work well separately as well as together. I would love to continue this series on and experiment with different paintings and imagery and text and see where it will take me. Perhaps even going back the idea of censorship and women.

Research: Bruce Conner

I discovered Bruce Conner at the Museo de Sofia while in Madrid. I was really interested in his assemblages, and how he layered images together to form one big image. This links to my collages and my own assemblages. I really liked how from far away they would look like one big image but if you were to look up close, you would be able to see each image layer on top of each other, and the different images which were used to make the one image. It's this kind of assemblage that I am interested in. His etchings also interest me, especially his photo etchings. The amount of detail that he gets into them is impressive, and something that I hope to aspire to. His theme is completely different to mine, as his work is very morbid, death like, whereas mine is more about social issues, but his work interests me. Surrealism, abstraction, morbid themes. Research: Kathe Kollwitz

Powerful images of war, death, poverty and hunger. Really captures the pain and hardships of the people during this era. As an artist herself, she was an advocate for female artists, teaching female artists in the Berlin school of Women Artists. I find these images fascinating and eye opening, the contrast between these images and society today is mind blowing, how different things are today. I also love her drawings and how evocative and meaningful they are. How each mark made is meant. This is something that I hope to one day achieve within my own artwork. Her self portraits also seem to show her own personal hardships, the pain on her face, the exhaustion. Especially as war had become the most pressing issue within her lifetime. The struggles, the hardships, the fear of losing everything - all things that I can personally see within her self portraits.
